General illustration guidelines
Our illustrations are simple and explanatory. They use various opacities of color from our primary and secondary brand palettes. When an illustration need is identified, check with the brand team first to see if one already exists that can be used as-is or modified to meet the need.
Shapes
Use overlapping shapes to create a sense of space and depth. The intersection color should be a tint of one of the overlapping colors rather than negative space.
Use predominantly solid shapes with minimal use of lines.
Including a simple shape behind multiple foreground elements can help tie everything together.
Colors
All of the variations of the brand colors can be used in equal amounts in the same illustration if needed.
Illustrations containing people should show diversity in facial features and skin shades if possible. Unnatural skin or hair colors, such as blue, are acceptable to use.
Text
General text should be represented as segmented lines rather than actual words.
Readable text should be used sparingly and only when it is important to the meaning of the illustration or if needed as a title.
Only use brand fonts.
Icons
Icons should be from the Streamline Icons library or created in a similar style.
Guidance
Do not use gradients.
Do not use blend modes or transparency.
Do not use stock graphics.
Tips
When simulating transparency between two overlapping shapes, follow these tips to avoid visual artifacts on shared shape edges.
Overlap whole shapes instead of dividing everything into individual pieces.
Stack shapes so that similar colors are adjacent to each other, not separated by contrasting colors.
